Do you know that you're being watched? Not in a creepy sort of way, but someone looks up to you. It may be your child, but it may be a sibling or cousin, a classmate or friend at church, a kid down the block. There is someone who sees you as a role model. Maybe just because you're older. Maybe because you're a good athlete or wear cool clothes, you're funny or smart or sweet or outgoing. Or maybe you're the first from your family to go to college so now they think they could too. Whatever the reason, someone wants to be like you. They get cues from you on how to act, speak and think. So what kind of role model are you? Because you can't change it. They're watching whether you like it or not. Your responsibility is to set a good example. Do you teach them to chase money and power and status? Do you embody selfish motives and take sole credit for all your accomplishments? Or does your life reflect Jesus? Do your words and character point them back to our savior? Do you glorify God and acknowledge His presence and goodness in your life? Every choice you make is telling someone else the right way to behave. Be a positive influence. Be a good role model. They're learning from you.

Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe as you hold out the word of life. — Philippians 2:14-16
Stars. They've always been a source of constant hope for God's people. "Your descendants will be like the stars," God told Abraham. "When I see the stars, what is man that you are mindful of him?" the Psalms ask. The Wisemen from the East followed a star to Jesus. Luke reminds us that Jesus was a star of morning light come to us from heaven to shine on those in darkness. And now, we're stars. God's points of light in the dark sky of the universe. So let's make today a day where our light shines God's glory to a dark world around us.
Almighty God, the incredible expanse of your universe, with its billions of stars, exceeds my limited comprehension. But I thank you for calling me to be a place of light in the dark world around me and I pledge to shine your light today in the lives of all those I might. Through the name of the Bright and Morning Star I pray. Amen.
“And let us arise, and go up to Bethel; and I will make there an altar unto God, who answered me in the day of my distress, and was with me in the way which I went”
To get the angle I wanted in this photo, I had to put my camera on a small tripod, which I then put into this stream. I had thousands of dollars worth of camera equipment balancing just an inch or two above the moving water—so I was nervous. I didn’t want my camera to go under, so I was anxious about how secure it was, and I put a lot of faith in that small tripod being able to hold my camera up high enough.
It reminded me of an ancient Jewish story about a boy named Nachshon, who tradition says was the first Israelite to begin crossing the Red Sea during the exodus out of Egypt. According to the story, when Nachshon stepped nervously in, the waters didn’t part. When it was up to his waist, the sea still did not split. It wasn’t until the water was up to Nachshon's eyes that God parted the waters. This is told as a story of faith and courage … but it’s also a story about action. Sometimes God doesn’t act alone—He’s waiting for us to take a step of faith into the water, no matter how scared or nervous we might be. We don’t always know what the outcome will be when we take that step, but God wants us to act on our faith and trust Him anyway.
I wonder what you’re facing today that will requires you to act with faith and courage. If you want me to pray for courage for you today, write NACHSHON in a comment and I’ll pray for you by name.

If you’ve been following these posts for a while, you probably already know that the Hebrew language is based on word pictures and symbols. It’s a language that conveys emotion and experience, not just information. It’s a language that creates images, like the one in the book of Isaiah where the prophet writes that God arrives “... like a rushing tide driven by the breath of the Lord”. What an awesome image of God’s power and beauty! This verse reminds me of the way the ocean crashes over rocks at the shore. As the tide rolls in, the waves are unstoppable and have immense power when they hit the rocks.
The Hebrew word for “breath” in this verse is “ruach” which means “Spirit” … so Isaiah is say that when God shows up in a situation, it’s with unstoppable power of the Holy Spirit behind Him! Paul, one of the first followers of Jesus, shared an idea about the power of God’s Spirit too when he wrote; “The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you …” Now, don’t miss that—Paul is saying that the Spirit who arrives like a rushing tide lives in YOU!
This means that if you’re facing an obstacle today … it your life seems insurmountable today, they God is able to send His Spirit to you with this “rushing tide” power. If you need the awesome, unstoppable power of God in your situation today, LIKE this post and write WAVE in the COMMENTS so we can pray for you.
“For he will come like a raging flood tide driven by the breath of the LORD.” Isaiah 59:19
