On my last post I was talking about our first day in Jasper, exploring around in -22 degrees Celcius. Annnnd then it got colder. This is from Day 3, taken before sunrise at -32. It was so cold we had fevers in the evening from battling the cold for so long, and shooting photos only happened in five minute bursts between twenty minute long warm-up breaks. Would do it again in an instant though. I imagine that at no other time is walking up this frozen canyon even remotely possible, but in these conditions many people felt completely safe venturing up it.
On our drive to Laugarvatn we encountered 40+ mile an hour winds that shook our car like a leaf. Because of the wind, there were 4 foot drifts of snow in the middle of the road and we were forced to wait 2 hours for a plow to clear it. After waiting for a while, I decided to step out to try and take a few photos. At the protest of @brandoneckroth, I swung the door open, almost lost control of myself and continued to walked about 40 paces ahead of where our car was parked to grab a few photos of the scene. I couldn't see anything more than 10 feet in front of me and the windchill was unbearable. As I made my way back to the car with almost no visibility and the wind blowing ice, snow and water into my eyes, I could feel that burning sensation in my hands that I knew wasn't going to end well. I made it back to the car, stumbled into the drivers seat and began warming my hands up as fast as I could. The pain that followed was some of the most intense I've experienced and was met with cries of agony. All this to say, it was worth it for the pictures I got. Next time.... I should probably wear gloves.
