Day 18 | 6.11.2017 | Taiharuru River (km 371) — Whangarei Heads (km 399) —
Hugh from Tidesong was kind enough to take us over the estuary in the morning and first up was the gentle Kauri Mountain Track. We then headed down to Ocean Beach for some sandy walking. What followed was a couple of sweaty hours of steep ascents and descents as we hiked the Te Whara Track, which heads straight up to a 476 m summit for some amazing views, and then a few more up and downs, past Mt Lion, to finally finish up at Smugglers Bay. We then road walked into Whangarei Heads. On the Te Whara Track, we met Ben, who offered us to stay on his lawn once we hit town. We took him up on his offer and we were treated to free accomodation and delicious beer! Ben — you’re an absolute legend!
