I pulled up some heirloom carrots so I can start prepping beds for the next season. My friend Michelle @miss.mclaughlin recommended Ottolenghi’s harissa carrot recipe to me ages ago- so that’s what happening with this lot. 🥕 🥕 🥕
And the chooks are happy because they got a whole heap of carrot tops- they used to dis them but have finally decided to add them to their gourmet diet!
Damsons three ways: chinese plum dipping sauce, damson and cardamom semifreddo, & damson jam. I tried a recipe by Anna Jones for oven jam for the first time - I didn’t know you could make jam in the oven before this! I flavoured one lot with lemon verbena and one lot with bay leaves. I am really pleasantly surprised with the result- the fruit is still intact and the texture of the jam is deliciously velvety. The cooking time was a good half an hour longer than the recipe suggested but that’s ok- it was very uninvolved and only required occasional stirring. The other upside was that it used less sugar than a stovetop jam and still had a good ‘set’. I am definitely going to use this method for cherry jam next year. I also made a jar of stovetop jam as I had some damson puree left over from making the semifreddo. And that’s damsons done for another year!
Rainbow carrots!! 🌈🥕 did you know that colorful #carrots are from around the world? 🌎 ➡️ Purple and Yellow carrots hail from the Middle East and Turkey and Red carrots originate from China and India! 👩🌾👨🌾 #rainbowcarrots

Sorry guys late on the recipe for my mums #cucumber salad, so we cheated slightly and used a pre made tofu and then this spicy sauce. Both items are from Boxhill Chinese grocery stores. 4 cucumbers, 2 teaspoons of that spicy sauce and then add in the pre made tofu salad 😋 #summergarden#summerveggies
Picked 6kg of damsons. The fridge is already full to the brim so these will have to be processed sooner rather than later. 🤩
My first sighting of a native ‘Neon Cuckoo Bee’ in my garden today! The colour was exquisite (more pics in my story). I have lots of blue-banded bees at the moment so I’m not surprised to find a neon cuckoo ... female neon cuckoos lay their eggs in unsealed blue-banded bee nests! 😡 The pollen reserve left in the nest by the female blue-banded bee (ready for the hatching bees) will be eaten by the first to hatch ... blue-banded or neon cuckoo 😕 So these guys are pretty but shafty! 💙💙🐝🐝
Pruned ✂️ back some OREGANO 🌿 to make room for the CILANTRO (see previous post). I usually dry my oregano - it’s super easy:
✳️Tie the stems together with twine.
✴️Hang upside down in a out of the way corner of house until completely dry.
✳️Remove the leaves from the stems.
✴️Put leaves in small canning jar in the spice cabinet.
✳️Crush leaves and top your favorite pizza 🍕 with it! 😋
🌿For now, it’s rockin’ this galvanized bucket next to the pink @sunpatiens, don’t you think? 👍
I confirmed that I did in fact find knot root nematodes in my garden. I had planned on waiting until the weekend to investigate more thoroughly but when a gardener sees a problem..... she starts digging. I took out three pepper plants and a huge chard from this section and didn’t find any more strange, knobby roots. Phew. I’m hopeful that the nematodes were only in the spot where I found them. Wishful thinking? I dug about 18” deep of dirt out of this area which is about 4 a foot radius from the nematode roots. No other plants look to be affected. 5 plus wheelbarrows of dirt removed. My back will be sore tomorrow. Looks like we need to get more compost.
Happy Saturday! 👩🏻🌾So great to be out in the garden harvesting onions and planting new seeds. 🌞💚🌞
Did you know onions 🌱are one of the earliest seeds you can start in the spring? Start seeds inside 8-12 weeks before last frost date, or plant outside now in mild winter climates.
Watch 👀 my new YouTube video (click on story highlight) - I’ll share tips for growing onions successfully, and show you how easy it is to start onion seeds inside (or outside in the garden).
