Each year in Suptember since 2015, with the support of @sicmaui I take part in an ultra distance race of 220km at Sup11City in Friesland. Somewhere around this time in February and March, hundreds of athletes around the world is training for this series of events. Let me warm you. The amount of friends you'll make from this sport can be overwhelming. Need I say the experiences? But it's never too many as we're still a tight knit community still in its infancy. When you sup, these are your Ohana.
What's the appeal the benign asks.. To me - Sup races, no matter the distance re-enacts a solo travel which I loved doing as when I was a shoestring traveler. You're a voyager; trodding on the routes less traveled. The other paddler you meet on the water is out on a similar adventure, a pilgrim, alone in their own tracks, it's the journey, not the destination, you draft, paddle alongside instantly becoming battle comrades - if that even makes sense.
You may not speak the same language, but you will communicate, water is your medium, smile, hammer each stroke for stroke, and try not to lose sight of the other. Most times the final result don't even matter but you'd remember him or her for the experience so unique you'll never forget. No ranks, no politics, no gender differences. Just water immunity.
SUP. Will I see you on the water?
So stoked to have been one of the speakers at the VIMFF (Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival). To be on stage with my adventure partners, sharing our passion and inspiring people to try new things and push their limits was amazing. I am so happy to have shared this stage on that special event on paddle boards with Chris Bertish who traversed the entire Atlantic Ocean solo on his board to feed thousands of people in Africa. A night to share to follow your dreams and how believing in your passions can have a massive impact in the world. Also learned this week I am now sponsored for my future wild adventures! Many more to come. A special thank to Aya that planted the seed of the SUP world into me.
