#FollowFriday#SanDiego is home to some amazing aquatic-based activities such as water skiing, #surfing, #sailing, #kayaking and stand up paddleboarding(SUP). Thanks to efforts of Bob Pratt, he is raising awareness to the need for increased safety measures for SUP users. Scroll through any leisure or recreation magazine, and rarely will you find ads that feature beautiful models on a SUP's wearing #lifejackets and using the leashes correctly. Cycling magazine feature the use of safety equipment. Sports mags showcase pads, helmets, etc. The aquatics industry advocates swim lessons, vigilant supervision and layers of protection, yet hundreds of people die every year from drowning due to falling off a SUP because they weren't wearing a lifejacket and did not have the board's leash secured to their body.
Bob heads up the Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project, and Great Lakes Water Safety consortium. Go visit their Facebook pages for more info on raising your awareness of SUP safety. Make a donation!
How can you help in your community? Simply encourage your friends to wear leashes and lifejackets when SUP'ing. Demand rental shops make them a requirement. Reach out to magazine ads that dont have an authentic depiction of this fun sport with safety equipment on.
Gently remind your friends who may post vacation pics about leashes and lifejackets. If you are the owner of a swim facility, include literature about safety equipment and drowning dangers when not wearing leashes and lifejackets while SUP'ing.
