This One Goes To Eleven - Classic Albums Revisited!
SYSTEM OF A DOWN System Of A Down (1998)
This is where it all began for the zany Armenian-Americans and it’s still their best album. Suite-Pee is a great attention grabbing opener, and Know is just as strong, with its massive riffs offset by Serj Tannin’s unique vocals, ranging from demented, rapid fire delivery to screams and roars. Sugar takes a detour into left field with its bouncing verse bass line before morphing into a storming finish and the rest of the album is just as good. This impressive first album shows a metal band with enough quirkiness and individuality to set them apart, but focuses more on aggression and power than some of their later work and is all the better for it. Rick Rubin’s in-your-face production ensures the band’s politically aware messages have the desired sonic impact and the album is a concentrated blast of furious energy from beginning to end.
Rick Rubin // "I don’t really have any control over what’s going to happen... It’s more just experimentation and waiting for that moment when your breath gets taken away...it’s not anything to master. You just have to recognize it when it happens and protect it from evaporating."

15 yrs ago today the #Audioslave debut album came out. Still one of my favorite records I've ever been involved in. #RickRubin's production is stellar, #TimmyC & @bradwilk are at top of their game, and the great #ChrisCornell is at his peak of beauty & power.

Rick Rubin // "Everyone has their own way of coping and dealing with the world... If something is painful, if you're sensitive or uncomfortable, if you feel like you're different, your choices are to examine this and figure it out, or to numb yourself and ignore it. Most people tend to numb themselves and ignore their problems to avoid how they feel. Most people...just look for ways to kill the pain. We live in a kill-the-pain society. TV kills the pain. Doctors prescribe drugs to kill the pain. Somehow I got into tuning into how I feel and trying to understand it."

Rick Rubin // "A lot of people who are artists don't understand it themselves. Especially the young ones. They feel different, but they don't know what it is. They feel more. Everything hurts. Everything. They're super sensitive. They see things that other people don't see."
