People keep asking me & writing me messages on how I can travel so much. To be honest: I am thankful everyday to be able to work in a job I love that allows me to see the world and open up my office wherever I go. Feeling a little sad at the state of society today. I want to ask, what are your views on influencer marketing on social media? This morning I heard about the YouTuber/blogger who has received a huge backlash for reaching out to a hotel and asking for a complimentary stay in return for social media coverage.
Now I know how that might look to many people, why should she get it for free? Perhaps a year ago I would have thought the same, but now I understand why she would do that and it just breaks my heart for her (I do not know her and nor had I heard of her until yesterday) that people are now bullying her on her social media accounts.
I’d like to be fairly transparent that when I post about hotels etc I have most likely received a free stay, sometimes I reach out to the hotel, other times they reach out to me, so really to no different to what this girl did. However, what I can be sure in saying is if I do not like a place, then I won’t recommend it. I have actually had a free stay before and really wouldn’t recommend it to any of my followers and was honest with that. But hoteliers heavily rely on social media exposure, and by giving someone a free stay, well it’s a win win for both parties, much cheaper than a magazine or tv ad and the reach is often much higher!
Anyway, I would love to know your thoughts? For me, media is media, whether is online, social or print, the goal is the same at the end of the day at just social media is much more accessible to everyday men and women!
