Egly Ouriet is based in the grand cru village of Ambonnay, the house is run by Francis Egly. Francis is a highly talented wine maker focusing on producing terroir-driven champagnes that express the beauties of their grape varietal and site in which they were grown. He practices biodynamic and organic principals in all his vineyards which span, Bouzy and Verzenay
Vignes de Virgy is made from 100% Old-vine Pinot Meunier from a small commune in the Petite Montagne de Reims called Vrigny. It has been acknowledged Premier Cru status since 2003. This vineyard is a terrific southeast-facing site based on a chalky hillside that produces low yields. Add to this, his late harvesting method and the result is an intense fruit filled champagne filled with beautiful volume and texture.
Tonights bottle was disgorged in July 2017. It is based on the following Vintages: 50% 2013 30% 2012 and 20% 2011. The wine has matured 36months on its lee's and is bottled without fining nor filtration with a Very low 4g/l dosage
This is a captivating fruit forward champagne in both aroma and taste, with an array of ripe yellow stone fruit that moves to citrus notes with a slight herbaceous/spicy undertone and light toastiness. It's both rich and delicate across the palate dancing between creaminess and a fine acid line. It's wonderfully structured with a slight austere minerally finish. Yummo!
Découverte du pinot meunier avec ce Orléans 2015. Nez discret sur robe limpide rubis. Du cassis, de la framboise, épices douces qui se mélangent aux tanins de peaux croquants. Structuré et simple à la fois avec une persistance courte. Bon rapport qualité prix à mettre sur viande blanche un dimanche midi sans complexe.
Que tal conhecer uma região produtora de vinhos diferente? Eu estou no Vale do Contestado (meio-oeste de Santa Catarina), que tem muitas vinícolas, algumas delas fazendo vinhos muito interessantes. Uma visitação obrigatória é a Villaggio Grando, uma das mais lindas vinícolas do Brasil, com lagos, araucárias e belas construções. A visita com degustação inclui uma mini-tábua de frios e queijos. Jérôme Prévost Fac-simile. The Meunier king Prévost has attracted a cult following, his 2 champagnes come from one vineyard, finding a bottle can be an adventure. Just 3600 bottles were made of the intense ruby colour bubbly. Jérôme’s rosé is made blending Les Béguines white champagne with red wine from Pinot Meunier grown in the same vineyard. This is my first try of 2014 vintage. Vinous with flavours of red currant, raspberry, fresh hazelnut and refined tannins on the palate. Serious fruit expression and depth. Drinks like Côte de Nuits with bubbles.
Ulysse Collin Les Maillons, a single vineyard Blanc de Noirs, speaks of the winemaker’s style and soil. Colour of this champagne is sooner rosé than white, it might put to shame some rosés of famous Grandes Marques. 2011 base yet with significant amount of reserve wines, disgorged two years ago in Feb 2015. Heavy dark fruit, spices, ginger, lots of chalk on the nose. Intense and vinous champagne. Perhaps a bit complicated for some, but just right for us.
