Smoked pike soup with dill and lemon infused oil.
This has become one of my favorite soups. It's just as delicious if you substitute salmon for pike and also works equally well with fresh fish or dried. We smoked these pike until they were about half dry, not so much by design as that is when I was ready to use them.

When it’s bush for miles and miles and you spot a lion so far away. #noroads
Seeing a male #lion sitting in the open is a rare sighting. But what comes next is amazing. We look for signs, and in this case we saw some #giraffe staring quite strangely. We follow that stare and find the lion. To take the best photos you need the best guide. Andy and I are spending 12+ hours a day in the car waiting and waiting for a moment like this. Sometimes nothing for days. Photographing #africa is not easy, but a #passion
If you liked last years exhibition #fragilestrength you’re gonna love part 2 coming this year later.
Winter river travel, on the Tanana near the second camp we lived at, about 80 miles downriver.
I do appreciate that even at the coldest temperatures we purposely travel at (-25°F) once you start moving,(especially when snowshoeing and/or pulling a sled) you end up with very few layers on. On foot, in weather that cold you cannot afford to sweat, so you have to stay on top of regulating your body temperature. Often I will start out cold, because I know once I start, I'm going to be down to a thin base layer and a light sweater or flannel in no time.
It's the same when I go out to chop wood, even at -40 I find a hat and some gloves is really the only thing extra things I need.
This winter we started the season with far more firewood put up than we normally do. Mostly due to building the cabin, there was just a lot of odds and ends, and rejected logs, from the building project. We usually only cut up a week or so of firewood at a time.
One of my favorite places on the island. #oceandreamers#MagicalPlaces#offroad#stairwaytoheaven
🌴🌴🌴 #paradise
My favorite way to make chaga.
From fall through spring I basically keep a pot of chaga on the wood stove all the time, I like it brewed dark black. If I can see through it at all, it is not strong enough. There are s birch stands all around the cabin, so the chaga is basically always available.
The few weeks that the birch sap is running is the best time for drinking chaga. We use the birch sap for all of our drinking and cooking water when it's available. And when boiled to make the chaga it is self sweetening. And if I have them around I definitely throw a cinnamon stick in the kettle.
