Mono Lake is of critical importance to millions of migratory birds that feed on its rich brine shrimp population. In addition to efforts being made to allow Mono Lake to rise to sustainable water levels after over exploitation as a water resource for Californian cities, the area has been protected to preserve these unique limestone tufa towers.
Come visit Mono Lake, located on Highway 395, 13 miles east of Yosemite National Park, near the town of Lee Vining, California.
One of the oldest lakes in the western hemisphere, Mono Lake is hauntingly beautiful, reflecting the snow-capped Sierra Nevada in its shimmering blue waters.
It's June, so the #MonoLake interns are here.... Welcome Andrew, Tina, Sara, Matt, Gabby, Sarah, and Grace! The #MonoLakeCommittee has had summer interns nearly every year since our founding in 1978. Interns lead canoe tours and South Tufa tours, staff the bookstore, and introduce thousands of visitors to the Mono Lake story. Do you want to spend a summer at Mono Lake? Last week #MonoLakeCommittee staff ventured out past Gaines Island to the narrow strip of water still separating Negit Island from the mainland. We checked out the current low level of #MonoLake, discussed ways to keep coyotes from reaching the nesting #CaliforniaGull population next summer, and recovered motion-sensing wildlife cameras that were set up to document any coyotes sniffing around the area. Oh, and we found a dead canoe. // Photo by Elin Ljung.
