"My Husband is my greatest surf-buddy and he sure pushes me! We were in the Republic of Congo serving on the Africa Mercy Ship and I happened to find a sweet little Clayton 6ft board in some storage room and so my husband and I gathered two more guys and headed off to find a wave somewhere. We found a beach bar and asked the guys if people ever surfed here and we got a head nod and a direction so we walked down to water. It was swirly and crunchy and dark brown! I felt a twist in my stomach (I also swear I saw something big and dark out there) but flip, when your around a bunch of men who don't see danger, something in you just can't back down. So we all jump in where a rip is sucking up fast and hit the backline - but it's all over the place and when a set comes, you know all about it. I was scared but I thought: if I just get one set I can go in. Well, I got a set wave and ended staying out for at least another 2. One of my Lyft drivers during PAX South was conversing with me during the ride about places to check out, and she also mentioned a local spot she was bartending at. Stopped by the next day to say what up, and was greeted by a great team of bartenders and locals I wish I had more time to get to know.
