Day 15- Imagine
Everyone knows that theatres are haunted. Any theatre worth its salt has at least one really great ghost story about their resident ghost. And it is a long standing tradition that a single light called the "Ghost Light" is left on in the theatre at night. The last thing done before you leave is the placement of the ghost light. Stages are really dark when you turn all the lights off. It is truly black and an unsuspecting person could easily fall into the pit or crash into scenery. A ghost light provides safety.
But like many aspects of theatre, there are lots of superstitions surrounding the ghost light. My favorite is that the ghost light provides illumination for the ghosts to come out and perform. Since all good theatre ghosts are either actors or techies, it's nice to know that they get a little light to do their thing.
Theatre is full of traditions. It is wild imagination and craziness. A dark stage is full of potential for that imagination to break loose. To me, the ghost light has always been a symbol of potential. A welcome beacon in an otherwise dark theatre. Just get ready. Imagination will run rampant here soon.
