The area of the modern city of Jacksonville has been inhabited for thousands of years. On Black Hammock Island in the national Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve, a University of North Florida team discovered some of the oldest remnants of pottery in the United States, dating to 2500 BC. In the 16th century, the beginning of the historical era, the region was inhabited by the Mocama, a coastal subgroup of the Timucua people. At the time of contact with Europeans, all Mocama villages in present-day Jacksonville were part of the powerful chiefdom known as the Saturiwa, centered around the mouth of the St. Johns River. One early map shows a village called Ossachite at the site of what is now downtown Jacksonville; this may be the earliest recorded name for that area. 📷: @boipinoy

Happy Valentine’s Day from your RoamFlorida Crew! Hope y’all have a safe and happy holiday!
Florida State University was 1851 and the main campus is located in Tallahassee. The university comprises 16 separate colleges and more than 110 centers, facilities, labs and institutes that offer more than 360 programs of study, including professional school programs. In 1819 the Florida Territory was ceded to the United States by Spain as an element of the Adams–Onís Treaty. The Territory was conventionally split by the Appalachicola or later the Suwannee rivers into East and West areas. Florida State University is traceable to a plan set by the 1823 U.S. Congress to create a system of higher education. The 1838 Florida Constitution codified the basic system by providing for land allocated for the schools. In 1845 Florida became the 27th State of the United States, which permitted the resources and intent of the 1823 Congress regarding education in Florida to be implemented. 📷: @aerialtallahassee

Vilano Beach is right up there near Jacksonville area near the St Johns River. I kept going back to this image and I don’t know enough about photography to explain why, but artistically I think it’s the movement and the point of view at which it is taken, and the contrast of the white and green. Thank you @nickerson_c for tagging us in this! Hope y’all are enjoying your weekend!

The Floridan Palace Hotel, formerly known as the Hotel Floridan or Floridan Hotel, is a historic hotel in Tampa, Florida, United States. It was designed by prominent Tampa architects G.A. Miller and Francis J. Kennard and built in 1926, opening in early 1927. On March 12, 1996, the Floridan was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. The hotel's bar, the Sapphire Room, was a popular nightspot during World War II for servicemen who were training at nearby Drew Field to fly B-17s over Europe. Many of the service men at that time were housed in makeshift barracks located underneath the bleachers at the old Florida State Fairgrounds racetrack a few blocks away. The bar's wild reputation at the time earned it the nickname "The Surefire Room". Elvis Presley stayed here back in 1955 after a concert at Fort Homer Hesterly Armory. 📷: @wowph_

Riviera Beach is home to the Port of Palm Beach and a United States Coast Guard station, and has its own marina. Riviera Beach is home to Blue Heron Bridge, one of the country's top rated beach dive sites. In 2015, Riviera Beach renamed part of Old Dixie Highway that runs inside the city limits as President Barack Obama Highway. Riviera Beach was originally called Riviera, and under the latter name was platted in 1913. It was named after the French Riviera. Riviera Beach is predominantly an African American city and it is on the List of U.S. cities with African American majority populations. 📷: @cathyjahn

A red cross is placed on a white shield, with the state seal centered. The flag represents the land of sunshine, flowers, palm trees, rivers and lakes. The seal features a brilliant sun, a cabbage palmetto tree, a steamboat sailing and a Native American Seminole woman scattering flowers. I love this by Sarah @thickpaint The first time I saw her work it was at one of those sips and strokes classes, and I just loved her work! We recreated an octopus 🐙 she had painted. To me it was so cool, but even cooler still when I got to run into her a couple of times. Go check her out @artigras that’s coming up in Jupiter, FL Thanks for tagging us Sarah! ❤️
The @flstrawberryfestival is quickly approaching! So, let’s take a look at what the Strawberry Festival looked like back in the day!🍓 #TBT

Prepping breakfast for the week has been a serious life saver lately! 🙌🏼 I can feed Leon & get us both ready for the day while it heats up in the toaster oven. And I don’t have to juggle making Leo happy + trying to make myself food at the same time.
Breakfast tacos + half a grapefruit (with sugar of course, let’s be real) this week! Crispy red potatoes + kale, eggs, and roasted jalapeños. I just wrapped up two tacos in aluminum foil for each morning & pop them in the toaster oven when we wake up! ☀️
