[Howards End. 2017]
Adapted from the book by E.M.Forster, originally published 18th October 1910.
I actually really enjoyed this adaptation, intellectually engaging and focused on character development without any of the fuss and frills to distract from the sparkling repartee of the script. It made Sunday nights worth staying in for. Plus Alex Lawther as Tibby was just fantastic!
The Telegraph reviewed:
“Howards End captured the tensions between tradition and modernity, at a time when the suffragette movement redefined women’s roles. Rather than bashing us over the head with these themes, they seeped into the background and lent it its colour, glimpsed every time a motor car growled past a horse-drawn carriage, or a well-meaning man insisted on helping the vigorous Margaret to walk on a pavement. It was like Downton Abbey for grown-ups.”
It’s perhaps with a little sadness that in this economic anti-tale, poor Mr Bast was ironically squished by his ‘lettered betters’ under that bookcase. Poor man. “Howards End still packs a powerful punch 107 years on.”
