Sometimes you get lucky and you're outside at the one moment of the day that it's not raining. This is not one of those days! Mom drove me for a couple hours in circles looking for a hiking location that wasn't too rainy because I refused to get out of the car 🌀🌧️ 🚫👑🐾 #whpthankful#raincouver#canonfanphoto Canon5d Mark3 24-70mm f2.8

We recently got news that this girl is showing symptoms of cognitive decline
Then yesterday she was placed on pain meds for discomfort in her spine
She started this life as a stray, passed from one shelter to another, barely missing her death sentence by a day, scared of everything and everyone
Nowadays on the trail she runs far ahead where we can’t see her
Back to her favorite swimming hole
Back to her favorite drinking spot
Back to the place on the shores of Thousand Island Lake where she dug up an ancient can of tuna one night at sunset.
When she found it, she danced around the banks like a wild dingo with the tin clenched tightly in her teeth.
You see –
Sometimes she wakes up in the middle of the night and paces around the house - not knowing where she is.
But if you let her out at the same trailhead, years later, she’ll guide you 8 miles upriver
Right to the very spot where she found that gem of a can, hidden under years of sediment.
I once met an old miner in the foothills of Sierras.
He was 90 and still made the hike out to the mountainside every day to chisel away at the granite in search of gold.
When I asked when he might decide to give up, he laughed and traced the entire range with his index finger
“I’m just getting started. Besides, giving up kills people.”
Someone said that these signs mark “the beginning of the end” for elderly big dogs.
But I’d like to think this is just the end of the beginning.
We’ve got our golden years ahead of us.
And there’s a lot more buried treasure left to find.
That’s look that will forever whisper, where too next Dad? I’ve tried my best to listen to his calls for more wild. Even when my vision is blurred by daily life, he has a way of letting me know. We all desire some type of adventure to satisfy our restless hearts, and he’s no different. So friends, where to next?
