You might’ve heard or read recently about a blogger/influencer who asked for a free stay at an Irish hotel in return for promoting the hotel on her social media channels, & was then publicly called out by said hotel.
The hotel basically shamed her for even having the idea of asking to stay free in exchange for exposure, & then ultimately goes & bans all “influencers” from staying at their establishment.
“The sense of entitlement is just too strong in the blogging community & the nastiness & general hate displayed after one of your members was not granted her request for a freebie is giving your whole industry a bad name.”
I felt the need to say something about this. Let me first preface that yes, arguing over whether or not you can stay somewhere for “free” seems extremely privileged, & in general, the whole influencer travel industry is a privilege in itself- not everyone has the luxury to travel & do it as a job, because some people might have other responsibilities or circumstances in life that won’t allow for this type of lifestyle.
But whether people like it or not, influencers/bloggers have become a new (& often cheaper) form of advertisement for brands.
It isn’t really a “free” stay- it takes resources, time & effort to create quality content for brands to then be able to use for marketing purposes, & what she had emailed to the hotel was just a business proposal.
I agree she should have done some more research before reaching out to the hotel (she prob then wouldn’t have even contacted them in the first place, as they are known for roasting people), but I don’t think it was right for them to take what she had written in confidentiality to them, & write what they did back.
People unable to take no for an answer from a brand & then complain about it, is another issue entirely. And people who fake engagement & followers for free shit from brands is actually fraud.
But in this case, she was defending herself from the backlash caused from the hotel ridiculing her. And the amount of hate she’s received as a result is honestly heartbreaking for me to read.

Honu!!!! Swipe right for size reference compared to me!
Also please excuse the image quality, they were taken on a GoPro which really isn’t that good (especially mine that doesn’t shoot in RAW). I am saving my pennies for a proper underwater camera housing for my full frame but it could take a while... 😫
When we decided to visit Kauai, I knew that Waimea Canyon was number 1 on my must have shot list. We got up early and planned it right so we could watch the sunrise above the canyon. Unfortunately the light was harsh and direct and washed out all the beautiful natural colors of the canyon. I was so disappointed. We tried to make a second attempt on a different day. On our way there, we received the alert about a ballistic missile inbound to Hawaii, so obviously that attempt was aborted. It took quite a bit of editing to salvage a few of my photos of Waimea canyon. This is the best one. I guess this just means we’ll have to go back someday. #waimeacanyon#kauai#jj_travelogue
