Great read! A friend of mine lent me this book during our trip to BC last year. Really well written true story about the impossibly rare golden spruce and the man who took it down in an act of protest against the logging industry. History, ecology, botany, industry, economics, survival, and the human spirit are all discussed in this book. And Grant Hadwin is definitely still alive!! Next time I’m in BC I’m going to try to get to Haida Gwaii @barsevskis@explore_bc@gohaidagwaii#thegoldenspruce#haidagwaii#explorebc#literature#hamont#stormwater#avesi
It was an adventurous day today despite no hookups. After getting 6” of fresh snow overnight, I discovered that the 4x4 was not working on my rental truck. It was a challenging 30+ km logging road drive to say the least. Self-shuttling via mountain bike on the snow was also interesting. Based on the ice buildup on my guides, I’m pretty sure it never got above zero. I’m sleeping in tomorrow. #flyfishing#fishing#steelhead#haidagwaii#britishcolumbia
After riding on multiple ferries for 8 hours at high speeds and looking at how intense the waves are today its crazy to think this was the only form of transportation between islands for over 100 years. #haidagwaii#canoes#beautifulbc
Last year, Anthill director Darcy Wittenburg set out with @mattyhunter, Charlie McLellan and photographer @nicolasteichrob to bikepack around the remote island of Haida Gwaii with... no food. They would forage, fish and hunt every calorie they consumed for 7 days and 207 km, living off the land much like the local Haida have done for centuries.
Here, Matt and Charlie pass by the remains of the Pesuta, a 264-foot barge that ran aground in 1928. Watch out for a short film documenting this adventure coming soon to @outsideTV.
