The Shape of Water is a film directed by Guillermo Del Toro and stars Sally Hawkins and Octavia Spencer. This movie is a classic. I️ didn’t expect to love a movie about a mute woman and a merman falling in love, but I️ did. First of all, the performances are all amazing. Sally Hawkins shines in a way I’ve never seen her before. She has no real lines of dialogue, but she manages to be one of the most real and compelling characters in a film this year. Octavia Spencer was very good and one of my favorites was Michael Stuhlberg. He played a very good comic relief character and a nice, sympathetic character. The direction is also amazing. There is a couple of scenes including a musical number which by the way, didn’t feel out of place at all, that really took my breath away. The special effects were amazing. If I️ didn’t know better I️ would’ve thought that that merman was a real being. The writing was also very touching and sweet without being saccharine. Also the ending was beautiful. So beautiful. All and all, The Shape of Water is brilliant, sweet and exceptionally well-made.
Thanks for reading! Meet The Spartans will be my next review, then Three Billboards on Monday.
