On the road again! 👍
We had a brief breakdown.
Calvin figured it out!
The starter relay went bad a few months ago so we decided we might as well replace the starter too since it was so old but it seems like AutoZone, Napa, and other retailers just aren't selling good quality parts these days. The previous starter lasted just over 30 years; I guess we shouldn't have replaced it. 😆 Eventually we need to invest in a Toyota starter if they're still available. This new Autozone one was crappy.
We found that the new crappy Autozone starter failed; it had an internal short to ground. When it did this it completely drained our battery, but after a good 45 minutes on the charger and the installation of a new starter we are back to 100%!
Thankfully the starter has a lifetime warranty. I just wish it would last closer to that "lifetime" rather than just a few months.
All wires are good. No leaks. No corrosion on the grounds.
👍 We're off to The Keys!

It’s Christmas all over again! 🎄🎅🏼🎁 As you may know, we use a mail handling service through @escapeesrvclub (which we love!) that holds our mail for us until we are at a location that can receive it. We tend to have mail sent about once a month. Well, today’s box included a ton of Christmas cards! 💌 Thank you to everyone who sent us one. I did a lot of “awwww”-ing and laughing as we went through them. 😊❤️ #christmasinjanuary#escapees#xscapers#fulltimerv#rvlife
Working on updating our countertop, gaining a little more surface area, with a more modern clean cut look And losing a chunk of weight. I am so tired of measuring things in this RV just to cut it and then go to put it in and realize, “oh this corner is not actually a true 90” or, “oh hey the wall swells out a quarter inch right here.” So instead I grabbed a chunk up plywood cut it to the basic square size I wanted, and then tossed the old countertop on top of the plywood and stenciled out where to cut. May not be the proper way but hey, it worked.

We're back in Wilmington, NC this week, hunkered down in a hotel while the rig gets the remaining work done. Grateful to be in a hotel while the temps are in the 20s at night! #winning#rvlifestyle#hotelwithfurkids

When we began the venture of tiny living we knew 95% of the time we would be fine. But there was that 5% of situations that we knew would be a challenge when they arose. Last night was one of those situations. 🙈 Our oldest woke up vomiting in the middle of the night, and as everyone sleeps in the same space, most of the other kiddos were awoken by the smell of puke and crying. I worked to clean the mess, while Anthony whisked our puke covered girl to the shower, only to find we were out of hot water from washing the dishes moments earlier. 😩 I continued to bag up the linens for the laundry mat in the morning, and Anthony set to warming water on the stove to wash out the chunks tangled in Sophie’s hair 😝 It’s true, in that moment I SURE would have loved my laundry room back. And-MAN-a hot water heater that supplied more that a 4 minute warm shower would have been convenient. But we know these moments are few and far between, and nothing forms teamwork like being able to laugh with your partner in the middle of chaos. ♥️ So today we Lysol everything, wash all the things, and recoup from a night of sickness. And we realize that amongst the modern day inconveniences that this life sometimes allows, we still feel pretty dang lucky to have each other to do it with. #camperlife#fulltimefamily#blessedinthemess

One of the first questions people ask about our Airstream is what year it is, and if we renovated or bought it new. We were on the fence for months about renovating, but in the end we decided to buy new and we thought it would be helpful to share a little about our thought process for anyone out there trying making a similar decision.

This is what we call "perching" (dubbed so by my 6th grade teacher) and also the reason I spent most of middle school sitting in the back of the class- well that and my love for language arts (aka talking too much)! While Babe was loving all the beers on our Asheville brewery tour, I was falling in love with all the funky finds that made me feel like a kid again! I schooled Babe on the fine art of said perching, as well as taught him to best perk of getting moved to the back of the class- being able to easily hide whatever current book you were loving, so you could read while the teacher was talking (only way to get me to shut up #arebelandanerd)... sorry to all the teachers who ever had the challenge of teaching me! #alwaysarebel#nosurpriseIbecameateacher#payback

Wow...this year our entire life has changed! Tiny home on wheels, cross country move, new friends, tons of outdoor adventures and most importantly, new hearts. Our understanding of who God is and the way He views us has radically changed this year. It’s been a year of restoration. 🙌🏻
It’s obvious by our #bestnine2017 that you guys love our kitchen. Not only did we gain a new tiny house, a new city and lots of new friends but we also gained YOU! The support and love from our followers this year has blown us away and we are so proud of the community our little corner of the internet has produced!
We have lots of amazing things in store for 2018 and we are excited to see what God is going to do with The Mayes Team. We believe 2018 is going to be a year of increase! Thank you for being a part of our journey this year. We love you all!

Hi guys! If you are new around here, I wanted to let you know that we use this account as a way of recording our journey. Selfishly, it’s for us. To remember this life, that we are so grateful to live right now. Our life isn’t perfect, we aren’t perfect, and neither is our home. We are grateful for our imperfections and love this wild journey we are on. Thanks for following us on this ride, and here’s to 2018! ☕️-Mandy

I posted this photo nearly a year ago with some sort of well-intentioned caption about how I loved our kitchen but couldn't wait to redo the countertops soon. Well, we didn't get to the counters as quickly as we'd hoped, and, until yesterday, they looked exactly the same as they did in this photo. 😬😆 The only think I changed since last year is that I moved the herbs to the plant corner of our dashboard permanently, so that they receive enough light during the day. 🌿
If you've seen our story, you'll know that we're currently working to recover these counters. We're doing some sort of paint/epoxy chip process that we're super excited about. So go check out our story if you're interested in how we're redoing our counters, and keep your eyes peeled for some photos of the final product! 💪🏼🙌🏼 ~Sam #PhileasRemodel
