First visit home after moving to Denver less than a month ago. CO has an abundance of opportunities for winter activities but it does not have the Birkebeiner! Raced (participated) in my first Kortelopet with my dad and cousin—also first timers. 29K classic ski through the north woods blanketed in 7-10 in of fresh snow. Undertrained, overdressed and had not the best equipment but still had an amazing experience! Such a fun energy up in there in Hayward, WI. 10/10 would return—hopefully for the 55k Birkie!
For as much time as Andy Matheus and I spend adventuring in the Apostles, something always manages to take our breath away. Today we made our second excursion of the weekend out to Stockton Island.
The Lake was brooding and dark, with SW gales to 40kts, white out conditions, and not another person that we could see anywhere on the ice.
In a word, perfect.
As we carefully made our way around the NE tip of Stockton, we came upon one of our favorite locations, the twin sea stacks. We knew it needed exploring, but we had no idea what we were about to find.
As The Lake began to freeze this winter, the conditions were perfect to create one of the most amazing natural phenomena I’ve ever witnessed in the Apostles. Big northeast seas, pounding at the exact angle necessary, blew ice into this small cove and piled it 15-20’ high. And there it froze into a petrified wall. Before The Lake could freeze, the same wind blew waves into this cove again, hollowing out the massive ice wall into an incredible arch, some 12’ high.
We’ve been to this location in winter many, many times. Neither of us has seen anything like it before.
This image surely does not do it justice.
The American Trilogy is a modern classic from the seminal book, “Regarding Cocktails” by the late Sasha Petraske. I’m having fun working with the new Wollersheim Round Top Rye Whiskey and the addition of Apple Brandy makes this one right up my alley. Here I use a brown sugar syrup to sweeten and a trio of @bittercube bitters.
1 oz Round Top Rye Whiskey
1 oz @wisbrandy Wisconsin Apple Brandy
1/4 oz Brown Sugar Syrup
2 drops Bittercube Blackstrap Bitters
1 drop Bittercube Orange Bitters
1 drop Bittercube Cherry Bark Vanilla Bitters
Combine all ingredients in a mixing glass. Add ice and stir until well chilled. Strain into a chilled rocks glass. Garnish with orange peel.
