The laughing kookaburra is a large, terrestrial member of the kingfisher subfamily. Both the general name for members of the genus 'kookaburra', and the specific 'laughing kookaburra', are derived from its famous call. The laughing kookaburra is naturally native to the eastern side of Australia, but can now be found in the west after being introduced in the late 1800s.
