There were many more pictures to take today, but @suckingmywilltolive and I were too busy fighting to stay dry and warm over 80 miles in 35 degree weather, sleet and 40 mph gusts. The Mississippi pushed our limits all day long. On the way to Red Wing, MN a stranger saw us approaching a narrow lane on the highway caused by construction. He pulled alongside and blocked traffic with his hazard lights while we rode ahead. Thank you good stranger, you refreshed our spirits and elevated our faith in humanity. #biketouring#bikewisconsin#bikeminnesota#trempealeaunationalwildliferefuge#bigringbros
Google maps leads me down some paths that sometimes I wish it didn't. My hybrid bike handled this trail but someone with a road bike would probably be in trouble trusting Google with this suggested route. #bikeminneapolis#biking#bikeminnesota
Sometime in the future I hope to actually finish one of these crazy bike races that I keep signing up for... I rode the first 200 miles of the Almanzo Alexander to Prairie du Chein but with storms in the forecast for this evening, lack of hill training and a broken pedal, I decided to take a 100 mile paved "short cut" back to Spring Valley instead of following the 180 mile gravel route with extreme hills.
Even though I didn't finish, I definitely got what I wanted out of the race: more hills in a day and a half than I have ridden all year to this point, some of the most beautiful scenery of any bike ride I've done, and the experience of sleeping under an space blanket on the door mat of a rural Iowa business.
I'm really glad I got to participate in this awesome race and I think it will make all future races seem easy.
