Two soda fired mugs from one my last batches made as Lisa Hammond’s apprentice at Maze Hill Pottery. I must have thrown and handled thousands and this duo are likely my favourite that were ever fired. What makes soda firing so thrilling is that the pots you put in come out different every time, more or less. Normally the cobalt mugs are far more striking than this, which isn’t a quality I like, I prefer he more mundane, the less colour the better and in this instance only a subtle band of blue has remained around the top and the red shino slip that is hakeme brushed below has endured, more often than not it’s hidden beneath the waves of molten sodium infused with cobalt and black stain.
These handles are some of the more acceptable ones too. I honestly think the faster I got overtime at pulling these the better they got, they obtained a greater flow and feel from being handled and touched less. I recall near the beginning of my apprenticeship it would take me three to four minutes to attach and pull a handle yet towards the end it would take no more than a minute—it only took tens of thousands of attempts to shave off those minute and seconds but it has become one of the processes in pottery I am most fond of and had it not been for the apprenticeship they’d be years behind. It’s rare having the opportunity to practice quite as much as I did and albeit on forms I mightn’t make in the future the skills learnt were invaluable and will stay with me for the rest of my potting life.
I’ve still got hundreds of pictures from my time at Maze Hill Pottery and sharing them now I’ve left and a new apprentice has replaced me does feel peculiar—so I figure I’d just share them a little less often.
