Heavy weekend rain brought down some trees & rocks along the Parkway. Travel with caution & watch for debris. Check online map before you go. Link in the bio.
Photo of rock slide at MP277; expect closure in this area. More information as it becomes available.
Remember... just because temps are coming up in the low elevations does not mean that conditions are comparable on the Parkway. Reports from the Parkway’s high elevations are of VERY icy conditions, especially in tunnels and on North facing slopes that don’t see much sun. Please remember to check the real-time roadmap before heading out on any Parkway adventures. #ice#icicles#winter#weather

Rainy days on the Parkway do something special to this place. They somehow seem to change the pace and provide such beautiful contrast to the sunny day.
Thanks to Parkway visitor @marypressonroberts for sharing this beautiful moment with us. #fog#rain#trees#winter#perspective

Take a walk behind the gates on the Parkway and you will see how winter changes this place. It turns the bustling roadway of a summer day into a sleepy space of a Parkway put to bed for a long winter's nap. Although the motor road itself does not have a set closing and opening date, it is often the case that conditions on the road keep large sections closed to vehicles for much of the winter.
So leave that car behind and venture out for even a brief walk. You never know what you'll see #behindthegates. Have you been on a winter adventure on the Parkway? Tag us in your photos and use the hashtag #behindthegates. We would love to share your adventures! #winter#ice
Mabry Mill (MP 176) sure does look lovely with its “winter coat” on. Which is your favorite Parkway feature in winter?
Mabry Mill is just a short walk from SR-603, which makes it a good option to visit even when the Parkway is closed to vehicles. Happy exploring!
Did you know that winter is actually a pretty good time to see wildlife along the Parkway? With the leaves off of the trees and shrubs, line of sight is much better in the winter when most Parkway wildlife is still active.
Black Bears along the Parkway do not hibernate like some smaller mammals and may go wandering from their dens, especially on warm winter days. #wildlife#bear#winter

It's a foggy and snowing on the northern end of the Parkway today while skies are blue down near Asheville. The weather varies so much along this beautiful stretch of road that you never know what you will see around the next bend.

Hoot Hoot! We've got a happy story to share on this #wildlifewednesday. Earlier this week some visitors found this Great Horned Owl in Heart Pond on the Moses Cone Estate (near MP 294). They recovered it from the pond and discovered that it was still alive and very wet, cold and lethargic.
Parkway Wildlife Biologist, Bob Cherry, took the animal in and rewarmed it. It perked right up, but was still taken to the May Wildlife Rehabilitation Center where they will prepare him for release into this wild. #owl#wildlife#raptor#wildliferehab
During a Federal government shutdown, we do not monitor or update social media. Some Blue Ridge Parkway areas are accessible, however access may change without notice, and there are no NPS-provided services. For more information www.nps.gov/Blri
While many of our bats leave us each winter to hibernate elsewhere, several other species stay in the area. Volunteer Chrissy Verdream has been helping with acoustic bat surveys during fall migration and over winter. These surveys have found bats, including hoary and silver-haired bats, taking advantage of the occasional nice weather to fly around and feed on moths or have a drink of water. #wildlifewednesday#behindthegates

Due to inclement weather and dangerous road conditions, the Blue Ridge Parkway and all associated Parkway facilities will be closed today. Be safe and stay warm out there! #winter#roadclosed

This photo thoroughly sums up how we are feeling on the Parkway today. It is C-O-L-D with a snowy evening in the forecast. Stay warm out there!

Designed to give you glimpses of a veritable smorgasbord of blue ridge mountain scenery, the Parkway is designed for a "drive a little while, stop a little while" type of experience. How many of you are planning a Parkway trip for the upcoming season?

Now how's that for a Blue Ridge view? The high mountains of North Carolina may be dramatic, but the subtle beauty of Virginia a farm sure can't be beat. This diversity is one of the things that makes the Parkway "America's Favorite Drive". What is your favorite Parkway landscape? Share with us in the comments!

Warmer days in the low elevation don’t necessarily equal significant melting up above. I’ve accumulations across th roadway, especially near and inside tunnels often keep the roadway closed longer than lowlanders would assume. Thanks for your patience.
